Belux –a symbiosis of art and innovative technology
Belux lights stand for dynamic lighting effects and functional room design. The straight concept of design is convincing: Belux lighting models are adjusted optimally in terms of optics to the particular benefit.
In 1970, Swiss Thomas Egloff founded Belux in Birsfelden. From the beginning, he perceives lights and lamps as an exciting, appreciating central point in the room and puts a great emphasis on lighting effect and dynamics. His vision for Belux: the development of new lighting systems and lighting concepts. To realize his ideas, he seeks an intense cooperation with internationally respected designers. Right at the start, known architects also belong to the creative team of Belux. The experimental aspect is always his main focus during his work, resulting in absolutely new design lights for the living area. The huge success came as soon as 1992: Together with the Swiss designer Hannes Wettstein, an expert on his field, the light manufacturer develops the innovative low-voltage cable-track lighting system Metro and celebrates his international breakthrough. The bold concept works out and Metro's success spawns many imitators and still does inspire many others in this field. But Thomas Egloff wants more. In order to promote up-and-coming talents and to advance the development of new ideas, he launches 1984 an international design competition. This produces many creative heads which in turn enrich the range of products with their unique ideas, like, for example, the Belux Lifto
by Benjamin Thut, which the Swiss company successfully produces in series afterwards. Many lights perform extraordinary well at international design competitions. Among the winners are the classic Belux Lifto by Benjamin Thut as well as the floor lamp Belux Twilight or the pendant light from the Belux Cloud
series by Frank Gehry.
Belux perceives light as a kind of art and sticks to this concept. In 1992, the travelling exhibition Privates Licht (“Private Light”) draws attention and presents extravagant living area illumination from famous designers like Matteo Thun and Ron Arad. Many other events line the way of the light producer. 2001, Egloff brought Vitra in, an internationally successful furniture company. By doing so, the Swiss enterprise gets access to new manufacturing methods and complexes and also ensures the future cooperation with appreciated designers of present time. Today, Belux stands for exclusive lighting ideas and lighting solutions for private and business rooms. Design lights are characterised by their great customer-oriented benefit and captivates with their eternalness und markedly functionality. Thereby, the lights adapt optimally to the particular requirement. They give the room a visual uplift and combine in a fanciful manner direct work light with diffuse ambient light. Playing with different directions of light, illuminants and filaments creates a whole variety of effective wall and ceiling lights as well as floor and work lights. Some examples of a successful implementation of this concept are, among others, the Koi and Arba series. Also significant for Belux design lights is their simple, straight elegance, by which they adapt perfectly into the living area or workplace.
