Lamps and lights by Catellani & Smith surprise with their unexpected and fascinating design, which captivates the viewer. Every design has its own story, a mystic inspiration or a unique esthetics.
Catellani & Smith: Inspiration through the sun and moon
Every creation of the long-established Italian company Catellani und Smith is characterized by extraordinary manufacturing processes of its lamps and lights. In this regard, designer Enzo Catellani takes his inspiration from several elements of nature, the mysticism and luminance of the moon and the sun, for example. Catellani & Smith Stchu-Moon
and Luna are both series of lights, which are, as their name suggests, dedicated to the moon. Enzo Catellani, co-founder and the one, who gave the company Catellani & Smith its name, isn’t actually a designer, but a trained smith. It all begins in Italy, where Enzo Catellani, together with his brother, owns a small lighting manufactory. So he can early contact renowned brands like Flos
and establish his lights and lamps in the market. In 1989, he launches, this time together with British architect Logan Smith, the lights manufactory Catellani & Smith. The designers dedicate themselves to the idea of creating creative design lights, which are made by hand with much attention to detail. The company founders have stick to this credo till this day. So every series of lights is still available only in small volumes and each of these atmospheric lights gets an individuality that’s reserved for one-of-a-kinds.
The Catellani Smith design lights which are made in Villa di Serio have a meaning that reaches beyond their artful design and atmospheric lighting power. For example, the first Catellani & Smith collection was inspired by Alberto della Luce and his light tree. And the individually rotatable light arms of the Turcio soffitto lights remind of limbs of a tree. With the Luci D’Oro, Catellani & Smith have since 1995 paid additional attention to the light colour and have been making an effort to capture the warm, golden colour in their lighting design. This concept is accomplished with the Luna lights, which are shaped like big, golden discs illuminated by a candle. The moon is the ever recurring motive of Catellani & Smith lights. The Fil de Fer collection
consists of pendant lights
and floor lamps
with fixtures made of aluminium. This classic designlamp
by Catellani & Smith lets shine several halogen lights inside the light. The emerging mystical atmosphere is in full accordance with the credo of the lighting manufactory. With the Stchu Moon lights, Catellani & Smith go a step further. The design lamps from 1997 are characterized by a disc-like shape and irregular surface. According to the perspective, these lights resemble the moon looked at from the earth. 2004, Catellani & Smith for the first time addressed coloured lights with the Post Krisi collection
. The sole coloured lighting series by Catellani & Smith deals with different shapes and the interplay of light, shadow and transparency resulting from it.
With the Eco-Logic Light series, the designers have been demonstrating since 2008 how important nature is to them. LED
technology of the lights/lamps considerably reduces CO2 emission and energy consumption. But Enzo Catellani puts also great emphasis on the quality and colour of the LED light. The light that comes from design lights running on LED has to be calming and relaxing. Even when the Catellani & Smith LED technology provides a new take on the lights – the creative design and the surprising angles of visions keep being an unmistakable trademark of Catellani & Smith.
All lamps and lights by the long-established Catellani & Smith impress by a grace which creates an almost meditative atmosphere. The light shining from ceiling lights, floor lamps and wall lights is both atmospheric and relaxing just as natural light.
